English painting steps
- Sky and buildings: Base-coat the sky and right-hand buildings with #24 using a large brush.
- Sky colors: Mix #2 and #24 (1:1). Enrich the sky with a small brush.
- Stars: Dot on stars with #2 and #32.
- Pale buildings: Mix #2 and #24 (5:1). Paint the upper-left buildings and the cafe doorframe in the left foreground.
- Building shadows: Paint the shaded parts of all buildings with #6.
- Wooden floor and furniture: Mix #8 and #32 (1:2). Base-coat the cafe's wooden porch floor, doors, windows, tables and chairs with a large brush.
- Walls, glass and awning: Base-coat the walls, glass door and awning with #32.
- Floor shadows: Mix #8 and #22 (1:1). Deepen the floor shadows with a small brush.
- Wall and glass shadows: Mix #14 and #32 (1:3). Paint the shadows on the walls and glass door.
- Awning shadows and glass frame: Mix #8 and #32 (1:2). Paint the shaded awning and the glass frame in the left foreground.
- Tree: Base-coat the upper-right tree with #14 using a large brush.
- Tree highlights: Mix #14 and #32 (1:1). Sweep over the lit sides of the tree.
- Stone pavement: Mix #8 and #2 (1:6). Sweep on the pavement base color with a large brush.
- Pavement shadows: Mix #24 and #2 (1:2). Paint the shaded parts of the pavement.
- People: Paint the figures with #6, #2 and #22 using a small brush.
- Tabletops: Paint the cafe porch tabletops with #2.
- Furniture shadows and ropes: Use #6 for shadows beneath tables and chairs, and the ropes on the awning.
- Window lights: Paint the distant window lights with #8 and #32 using a small brush.
- Frame: Mix #17 and #2 (1:1). Paint the frame with a large brush.
- Second coat: Two coats help cover brush marks and make the color fuller.
