How to Plan a Paint Night at Home with DIY Art Kits
Share
A paint night at home works best when the project fits the people, the table and the time you have. Start with one DIY artwork per person, check the supplies before guests arrive, and leave a place for wet pieces to dry. A raised painting kit gives everyone a composition to work with without first drawing on a blank canvas.
This plan is for a painting date night or a small evening with friends. It uses two Relife options: a Coffee Shop fridge magnet for a compact project, and The Starry Night relief board for a longer painting session. You can follow the reference colors or choose your own.
1. Pick the activity before you pick the picture
Ask each person whether they want a small keepsake or a larger artwork. Then choose a similar format for the group if you want to paint at roughly the same pace. Mixing a detailed large board with a tiny magnet can leave one person working long after everyone else has finished.
| Project | Artwork size | Listed hands-on time | Display accessory |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coffee Shop magnet — DIY | 7 × 8 cm | About 30 minutes | Wood easel; magnet can also display on a suitable magnetic surface |
| The Starry Night relief — Small | 13.5 × 10.5 cm | About one hour; pace and detail vary | Wood easel |
These estimates describe hands-on work, not the whole evening. Add time for opening the kits, reading instructions, conversation, cleanup and drying. Artwork dimensions do not include the space needed for brushes, rinse water or the easel.
The Coffee Shop DIY kit includes an unpainted 3D fridge magnet, acrylic paints, brushes, a wood easel and an instruction card. Its raised cafe scene gives you shapes to follow. Select DIY: the Painted option contains a finished magnet and easel, with no painting supplies.
The Small Starry Night relief kit includes a relief painting board, paints, a brush, PVC palette, tutorial card and wood easel. It is a sculpted relief project rather than a numbered canvas. Its Medium and Large variants have different dimensions; Large includes a PS frame instead of an easel. For those choices, use our Starry Night format and size guide.
2. Count artworks, not just paintbrushes
For a two-person painting date, choose two DIY artworks if you both want a piece to keep. For four friends, plan four. Sharing a single artwork can be fun if that is the activity you agreed on, but it means taking turns rather than everyone painting independently.
You do not need matching designs. You could both paint the Coffee Shop scene in different colors, or each choose a favorite subject in the same format. Check every selected product's contents instead of assuming all kits share the same supplies. In particular, the Coffee Shop listing does not list a palette, while the Starry Night relief kit does.
3. Set up three small areas
- A painting place for each person: protect the table and set out the artwork, instructions and included tools. Add a separate mixing palette if your chosen kit does not include one and you plan to mix colors.
- A shared household-supplies area: have brush-rinsing water, cloths or paper towels, and a table covering ready. These are preparations for the evening, not promised kit contents. Keep drinking cups and snacks apart from rinse water and paint.
- An undisturbed drying area: clear somewhere the pieces can stay without being stacked or touched. Guests who need to leave promptly should plan for protecting the artwork without letting packaging touch wet paint.
Use enough light to see small raised details. A compact magnet saves space, but its fine areas still reward careful brushwork. Read the supplied instructions and Relife care and safety guidance before starting.
4. Give the evening a loose structure
Start together. Open the kits, check the contents and look over the whole design. Decide whether to follow the reference or try a different palette. Keep the display accessories aside while you work.
Paint at your own pace. Follow the kit's instruction card, work in manageable areas and allow layers to dry as directed. Treat the listed completion time as an estimate. It is fine to leave details for another sitting.
Use the right tutorial. The Coffee Shop product page has a video demonstration you can pause and replay. Its original on-screen instructions are in Chinese, so preview it before the evening if you need English-language guidance. Keep the supplied instruction card available.
Finish with the next step agreed. Decide where each piece will dry and when it can be handled or displayed, following the product instructions. A painted face that still feels wet should not be pressed into a box just because the social part of the evening is over.
5. Check the order before sending invitations
Confirm quantities, DIY finishes and current availability first. Review shipping and processing information for your destination before choosing a firm event date. When the order arrives, check that each participant has the expected artwork and supplies, leaving time to resolve anything missing.
Paint night questions
Do we need painting experience?
These raised designs provide the composition, so you do not need to draw it from scratch. Beginners should still allow time to learn the tools and work around small details. Matching the product photograph exactly is optional.
Can we finish in 30 minutes?
The Coffee Shop listing estimates about 30 minutes of hands-on painting, with drying additional. That does not include all the preparation or guarantee every person will finish in that time. Leave the evening flexible.
Do we need a dedicated couples kit?
No. Two individual DIY kits give each person a project. The Relife products discussed here are individual artworks, not a two-person bundle or a pair of canvases designed to join into one image.
Where can we display the finished magnet?
Use the included wood easel, or test whether the intended refrigerator surface attracts magnets. Not every fridge exterior does. Wait until the piece is ready to handle before displaying it.
Plan your evening: choose the Coffee Shop DIY magnet for a compact activity or the Starry Night relief kit for a larger painting project. Pick one DIY artwork per person, prepare the table and make room for drying.
